daughters of depression
research study
Black mothers (or mother figures) are tasked with unique socialization experiences to ensure daughters are equipped with the tools to withstand experiences of racism and sexism simultaneously in American society.
Black women are experiencing depressive symptoms at alarming rates while being told to be strong like the women before us. Many daughters witnessed their mothers' struggle with depression in childhood. How does this experience influence your version of Strong Black Womanhood today?
My name is Christin Haynes and I am a doctoral candidate at Montclair State University in Family Science and Human Development. My research focuses on the intergenerational passing of Strong Black Women beliefs and maternal mental illness. I hold a BS in Psychology and MSW from Florida A&M University. Taking the experiences from working with vulnerable Black families, I host a podcast Black Family Scholar where I discuss the culture of silence embedded within the Black families and black women mental health . I also design digital resources for the Black family which center our historical experiences in American society.
